And yet, here it is, a stubborn little movie released on Netflix that tries to accomplish the impossible. It’s a dense book, full of meditative and philosophical asides that have little to do with its meandering, often abstract narrative.

Nolan’s production is predictably massive in scale, capturing vignettes of different experiences of the evacuation, from English soldiers trapped on the beach to civilian sailors navigating their fishing boats into treacherous waters to military pilots circling overhead. Without such a heroic, collaborative effort, the war might well have been lost in 1940. While everyone’s still deep in Nolan mode after feasting their eyes on Oppenheimer, his latest historical epic, why not revisit his other World War II movie? Dunkirk takes place during the famous evacuation of Dunkirk, in which a motley crew of military and civilian vessels alike banded together to shuttle the remnants of Britain’s badly-beaten army across the English Channel back to the United Kingdom.
